PNG News: Toilets Rising
I would like the members to know that we thank them all and our generous community for their support in building this toilet block in the Marata settlement. We managed to get the footings and the accompanying drainage completed. Before we return in November the block work will be completed and the floor will be poured. Great progress with the locals very much involved .
The man in the red shirt is the land owner and the man in the white shirt is the Learning Centre principal (in the group photo).
THANKS TO ALL
Cheers

Film descriptions:
1) The First Wave: At the end of the hottest year in history in 2023, a Rising Tide of everyday people shut down the Newcastle Coal Export Facility, the World’s Largest Coal Port for 32 hours. Revisit the epic People’s Blockade with footage from the beach, the water, and the sky.  Join with like-minded local community members to learn how you can get involved in this diverse movement.
2) Takayna Defence: Resistance at the River’s Edge.
May 2024, at the junction of the Arthur and Frankland Rivers in Takayna / Tarkine, a forest defender heard the chilling sounds of chainsaws and logging machinery. These riverside forests — home to endangered Masked Owls, Azure Kingfishers, eagles, and Spotted-tail Quolls — were under immediate threat of destruction. Within days, our team of volunteers kicked into gear to defend these forests from logging. Over the next six weeks, citizens from across Australia took action in the largest community defence of Tasmania’s forests in over a decade. Of these courageous defenders, 29 were arrested. This film captures their stories and the relentless effort to protect what remains of our native forests. It’s a call to action for us all.

Youth Space at Grow the Future Bega:
We are working on final preparations to enable the SJA Youth Group to use part of the Grow The Future premises in Bega as a meeting and work space for their endeavours. The two old stables that Mary Barker and James Cook have agreed to let the Youth Group utilise now have a paved floor, connected power and lined and insulated walls and ceilings. The final step, before hand over to the Youth Group, will be installation of lockable doors. From there on, the Youth Group will begin to decorate and furnish the stables, and make it their own.

Eden Marine High School:
The Youth Group, with the support of SJA Deputy Chair Martin McGee, are making excellent progress on the establishment of an SJA chapter at Eden Marine High School. Aided by staff member Leif Bergersen, the Youth Group will very shortly make a series of presentations to students, hoping to inspire enough students to work together on projects that will benefit the local community and environment. This is all part of the SJA’s drive to ensure future generations in the Bega Valley are committed to, and experienced in working for the community.

The SJA Community Battery and Solar Garden Project team have been working through available Grants that may be suitable for us to apply for. So far there are around 10 Funds available. However, we are waiting to see if a private site for the battery & solar garden is approved. If the site is approved, then we’ll be submitting grant applications as a start to developing this project.
