Greetings Members and Supporters,
Lots happening within SJA as always…..
What can I do? How may I help?
***You can keep up to date and see photos via our social media pages and
webpage (links at bottom of email)
1) SJA are looking for PAVERS – around 2000 of them actually, for a
Youth space project at ‘Grow the Future’ in Auckland St Bega. Some old
stables are being transformed by volunteers into a Youth Space where our
SJA Youth Initiatives leaders can meet and operate out of.
Thanks to those who have already donated pavers.
Contact Mick Brosnan if you have spare pavers: annmickbrosnan@gmail.com
2) SJA sub group Bega Valley Advocates for Timor Leste (BVATL)
The next BVATL meeting will be held on Saturday 4 May at 10 am at Bega
Uniting Church. The main item on the agenda is the celebration of the
20th anniversary of the Friendship Agreement in Natarbora in July.
Also please note on your calendars that the flag raising to celebrate
East Timor’s independence and reporting to Bega Valley Shire Council
will take place on Wednesday 22 May. More details will be sent out
closer to the date.
Kind regards
Jan Midena
Secretary
BVATL
3) SJASC member Jeff Knowles from Ecofootprints has offered to run a two
day course focussed on energy sustainability in the home. It is based
on his highly-qualified and experienced work for both the ACT and NSW
governments, assessing homes for energy efficiency and sustainability,
with the aim of reducing excess costs for residents.
Many existing buildings are relatively poorly insulated, and present
challenges for tenants (and owners) through wasted heating, air leaks
and poor condition.
Jeff will present an interesting, participative couple of days, with
plenty of opportunities to actually assess several properties, and to
document the findings.
SJA has purchased some energy monitoring equipment and we will have use
of InfraRed cameras to examine “behind the walls and ceiling”.
The course is open to members and supporters of SJA, but places are
limited.
If you’re interested in participating, please email to the
secretary@sjasc.org.au
An overview will be returned to you by email.
Date and Venue To be Advised (it will be local)
4) Mothers Day “Celebrate Women in our community”
As part of the Pambula Rotary Markets @ Pambula Recreation Grounds.
Sunday May 12.
We are looking for women of SJA to assist on our stall – there will be
other related stalls.
Contact Gavin Bell 0411 564 120
5) Community Housing:
Thanks to Rotary Club of Hall (ACT) who recently donated their third
caravan to be used in Bega Valley Shire as crisis accommodation
Fabulously restored and completely fitted out with bed made ready to
house someone without a roof.
Thanks very much to the Hall team.
This van was delivered directly to a person on the return trip to
Pambula.
This reflects the continuing demand in OUR community.
This we often forget as we don’t often see or hear of these people
seeking the dignity of shelter;
A basic human right of course
This van is the 26th van being occupied each night along with our now 8
crisis transitional caravan units.
ALSO:
Thanks to all who have worked to complete our latest eighth crisis
transitional caravan unit at Pambula Reflections Caravan Park.
Special thanks to Mark Smith and Bill Foxwell again for their
enthusiastic and generous volunteering.
The units have been fabulously fitted out by Bega Seventh Day Adventist
Church and LIONS club of Merimbula and Pambula.
The last two units will be available for shorter three month periods at
this stage.
Another example of our community donations at work for our more needy
folks amongst us
What can I do?? How may I help ??
6) Volunteer opportunity:
Would you like to join our food collection team?
SJA have been collecting from Aldi and Woolworths Merimbula and Tura
Beach and Wild Ryes Pambula for around 12 years.
It’s a Friday morning commitment, sign up on a rotating monthly roster –
shift swaps possible once you know the setup.
Only rostered every few months.
Work in pairs to collect and transfer food from set locations by car to
Sapphire Pantry Eden where it is made available for people in need to
collect.
If this interests you contact Mick on email annmickbrosnan@gmail.com
or message us.
This team are rarely sighted and notoriously media shy, but do a
fabulous job behind the scenes.
7) Potoroo Palace team: the recent working bee achieved great things in
the grounds and gardens. Thanks to Deputy Chairperson Ann Wykes for
organising. These are a regular event throughout the year and if you
