SHOWING AT HEADLAND THEATRE TATHRA – SEE LINKS BELOW
Before COVID, a group of people from across the Bega Valley came together to watch *The Staging Post*—a powerful story of hope, courage, and human connection. Set against the backdrop of the global refugee crisis, it was an emotional and uplifting film that challenged stereotypes and showed that refugees are not the problem; they can be part of the solution.
The remarkable filmmakers behind *The Staging Post* never stopped documenting the refugee community in Cisarua, Indonesia. Last week, I had the privilege of seeing their latest film, *We Are Not Powerless* – this was personal to me as I have been working with them for six years- despite knowing the reality, I still shed some tears.
This inspiring true story follows Afghan refugees Muzafar Ali and Nagina Zahra, who fled the Taliban and became stranded in Indonesia. What began with a single $200 donation to open a small school has grown into one of the world’s most successful refugee-led education movements. Through determination, leadership, and community action, thousands of refugees have been able to reclaim their agency, dignity, and hope for the future.
I’m so happy to share that *We Are Not Powerless* will be screening at the Narooma Kinema on 9 July (two sessions) and at the Headland Theatre, Tathra, on 10 July (two sessions).
If you were moved by *The Staging Post*, or if you care about social justice, education, and the power of ordinary people to create extraordinary change, I encourage you to book your tickets now. Come and see this remarkable film, support those whose stories it tells, and be reminded that even in the most difficult circumstances, people are not powerless.
