Homelessness and its causes and implications are fundamental to our group and advocacies .
The Housing sub group meets to discuss immediate issues which arise from time to time. Our concerns are broad and encompass matters involving crisis accommodation, short term and long term housing needs, housing and shelter for victims of natural disasters such as bushfire, housing for refugees, housing for victims of abuse and domestic violence and government funded public housing and housing for those who simply cannot afford rental accommodation.
We have invested in a crisis accommodation facility behind St Clements Anglican Church in Merimbula . We now have sixty-five caravans out supporting fire victims, enabling them to have a roof over their heads until such time as they are able to get themselves into a place they can call their “home” . Very recently the Sapphire Anglican Parish has donated another $10,000 toward our crisis housing caravan project .
We also lobby for the needs of more permanent recognition of the plight of homeless and the need for refugees in our shire . In doing so we link with and support SEWACS Youth, Mission Australia and other community minded groups in finding accommodation for homeless people.
Meeting time.
The sub group meets at Toast Cafe in Pambula at 10 a.m. on the second Tuesday in the month preceding the General meeting.
